Baume et Mercier has a rich history, extending back to 1830 when brothers Louis Victor and Pierre-Joseph-Célestin Baume founded “Frères Baume” in the Swiss Jura mountains. In 1920, collaboration between William Baume, watchmaker and grandson of the founder, and Paul Mercier, saw the creation of Baume & Mercier.
In 1921, Baume et Mercier received the most prestigious watch making accolade, granted by the Geneva Watch Making Senior Committee (the Ecole d’Horlogie de Genève), the Poinçon de Genève. The distinctive hallmark, depicting the Geneva coat of arms, is placed only on movements which conform to precise criteria in quality and finish.
Baume et Mercier’s expertise in the field of watch making and timekeeping have been recognized by countless awards, extending back throughout its history. In the 1880s they won several awards for chronometry and in 1973 they won the Baden-Baden Golden Rose in Dusseldorf for creativity in jewellery watches with their Galaxie, Mimosa and Stardust models.
Baume et Mercier watches have a strong focus on design. Their logo, the Phi symbol, embodies their search for “divine proportions” which is an important element considered when designing each watch. Their motto: “accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality”, is evident in both the design and construction of their timepieces. Each new project in the Baume et Mercier studio is attributed to a designer who also incorporates input from a dynamic team of watch designers. In the Baume et Mercier workshop, assembling the dial, the hands, casing and the movement are completed meticulously by hand. The workshop is immaculate, with the air, humidity and pressure all regulated and strict rules and regulations on anti-static attire for those who enter to ensure the final product is faultless. Each watch, once leaving this environment, is rigorously checked to ensure perfection of movement and functions, precision of timing, as well as flawless aesthetics.
